Rima Flihan (Arabic: ريما فليحان, born June 29, 1975) a Syrian-Australian human rights activist, advocate for women’s rights, author, playwright and filmmaker. She is also a prominent opposition figure of the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
Early life and education[edit]
She was born on 29 June 1975 in Aleppo and studied literature and law at Damascus University.[1]
Career[edit]
With the beginning of the Syrian Revolution against the Assad-regime in 2011, she continued to work as a human-right activist and active member of the Syrian opposition. Following the brutal confrontation of peaceful protesters with Syrian regime forces in the city of Deraa in March 2011, about a dozen teenagers were arrested and tortured. With the siege of Deraa by the Syrian regime, Rima Flihan wrote “Bayan Deraa”, the “Statement of the Children of Deraa” on Facebook to protest against this military siege of the civilian population. [2] Her statement was subsequently signed by over 1.200 Syrian personalities.
