While in the Marine Corps she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served as secretary to Col. Albert S. McLemore. After writing articles for the Marine Leatherneck newspaper she was promoted as the only female editor. She then wrote and directed about 75,000 feet of newsreels for the Marines, covering the fighting in Europe.
Following her service, Lela went on to become her daughter’s manager, traveling across the U.S. after Ginger won the Texas State Charleston contest. Lela married John Rogers, and Ginger took his name. Lela Rogers went on to work as an assistant to Charles Koerner, RKO’s vice president of production and was put in charge of the studio’s new talent, training such people as Lucille Ball, Betty Grable, Joan Fontane, and others.
