The trilogy is written in the naturalistic style associated with French writer Emile Zola, while Dib&#;s later works featured surrealistic elements such as science fiction in his novel Qui se souvient de la mer.
Having started his working career as a teacher in the Moroccan town of Oujda at the age of 18, Dib worked at a variety of jobs including that of an interpreter and journalist. Born on 21 July , in Tlemcen, into a cultured family of artisans: his paternal grandfather and grand-uncle, the brothers Ghouti Dib and Mohammed Dib were masters of the Tlemcenian Arab-Andalusian music.
