Terry Bradley
British artist
Terry Bradley (born 1965, in Belfast) is an artist from Northern Ireland.[1] His early life was spent growing up just off the Shankill Road where his mother tried to keep him inside and away from the “Troubles” outside their front door.[2]
Life
[edit]Bradley created his first painting when he was 14 years old and is a self-taught artist.[3] He and his two brothers later set up and ran a factory manufacturing and exporting full lead mouth blown crystal. The company had to close its doors after four years.
Bradley then turned to his interest in art and fashion. He opened his own clothes shop in the trendy university area of the city. Called “Retro” the shop was soon a leader in fashion for the clothes conscious of Belfast. Terry's was the first shop to stock Red or Dead shoes and he had a regular Saturday DJ playing in the tiny outlet. He sold hand painted jeans and one-off shirts and jackets that he imported from all over the world. A few years later he moved to Dublin in 1989. Bradley initially started modelling clothes for friends to make ends meet. During this time however, he was busy painting and drawing in his spare time. Biography
Terry’s willingness to discuss his mental health struggles and how he uses artwork as a form of therapy has attracted many to his work and created a community within his followers. The breakdown of barriers creates a sense of safety for many, giving them space to feel heard, while offering hope for the future and a reminder to ‘Never Give Up’, a message at the heart of Terry’s brand. This has developed from his personal mantra into a message that he has chosen to recreate into a free wristband that is now available online and from both his Belfast and Bangor galleries. Featuring original art works, limited edition canvases, giclee prints and now a range of high end furniture pieces, Bradley’s two dedicated galleries in Ireland attract thousands of visitors a year who travel from all over the world to see his art in person. His striking pieces have developed a cult following with many adding his art to themselves permanently with stunning Bradley tattoos and there have been themed Bradley weddings and birthdays.
