Eleo Pomare

Eleo Pomare (20 October 1937 – 8 August 2008) was a Colombian-American modern dance choreographer. Known for his politically-charged productions depicting the Black experience, his work had a major influence on contemporary dance, especially Black dance. After a tour to Australia in 1972, and the subsequent return of his then lead dancer, Carole Johnson, his style of dancing continues to influence Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander modern dancers.

He founded a dance school, the Eleo Pomare Dance Company, in New York City, which continued after his death.

Early life and education

Pomare was born on 20 October 1937 in Santa Marta, Colombia, where on 19 June 1940 his sister Selina Forbes Pomare also was born. His father - James "Tawney" Forbes of Haitian/French ancestry - was captain of a cargo ship which while near Colón, Panama during World War II was torpedoed by the Germans. Six-year-old Pomare was with his dad at that time and was rescued, but his father was never found.

Afterward, Pomare went to live with his mother - Mildred Pomare Lee - in Panama. During 1947, he was sent on his own to stay with an aunt and uncle in New York City where a few years later, he was joined by his mother. Pomare attended New Lincoln School in Harlem and late

Choreographer and dancer Eleo Pomare was born in Santa Marta, Colombia. At New York’s famed High School of Performing Arts, he was mentored by Verita Pearson and exposed to guest teachers like Uta Hagen and Martha Graham. While still a student, Pomare taught dance to other youth at the Police Athletic League (PAL). Soon, his pupils were performing at churches, schools, and nearby Fort Dix. After graduating from high school in 1953, Pomare maintained his own dance company as he continued his training with Louis Horst, José Limón, Asadata Dafora, Pearl Reynolds, and Curtis James. He also befriended author James Baldwin, whose writing greatly influenced him. 

In 1960, Pomare gave his first major performance at the 92nd Street YM-YWHA to favorable reviews. The following year, he was awarded a John Hay Whitney Fellowship to study dance with Kurt Jooss in Essen, Germany. Pomare left the Jooss School and went on to reestablish the Eleo Pomare Dance Company, based in Amsterdam, becoming a sensation in Europe. Using his own approach to choreography and teaching, he created his most celebrated works: Missa Luba, which combined the Catholic Mass with the music and voices of the Congolese Boys’ Choir; Blues for the Jungle, which depicted the history of African Americans
