American flutist. Name variations: Eleanor Steindler. Born 1936 in Boston, Massachusetts; died Jan 16, 2001, in New York, NY; dau. of John C. Baker (president of Ohio University); sister of Elizabeth Baker and Anne Baker; Radcliffe College, BA; New England Conservatory, MA; studied with James Pappoutsakis, Marcel Moyse, William Kincaid and Harold Bennett; m. Frank Steindler; children: Catherine and Frederick Steindler.
Soloist, recording artist and teacher, began long career as teacher at Manhattan School of Music (1960s); played with American Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Metropolitan Opera; performed as soloist with Boston Pops and at Alice Tully Hall and toured US as recitalist; premiered works of Ernst von Dohnanyi, Passacaglia for solo flute and Aria for flute and piano at Carnegie Recital Hall (1969), which were composed for her, and later recorded them; founded Monomoy Chamber Ensemble (1969), which played in annual summer series at Monomoy Theater in Chatham, Massachusetts, and in later years at Weill Recital Hall; was member of board of National Flute Association (1977–84) and served as editor of NFA Newsletter, an important resource for flutists; gave master classes in flute; founded Mar

leanor Lawrence has had an active career as an orchestra player, chamber musician, teacher and soloist. During college and graduate school, she studied with James Pappoutsakis, who played in the Boston Symphony Orchestra for many years and taught at the New England Conservatory of Music. Following graduation, she studied for two years with William Kincaid, famous solo flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and later with Marcel Moyse, former Professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatory. In her own teaching she combines these two important traditions - the American and the French.
As conductor, she will lead three concerts for Monomoy Music in New York.
After receiving a master's degree at New England Conservatory, Ms. Lawrence came to New York City where she performed as a member of the American Symphony Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski, and played with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic as well as with Broadway shows, contemporary music groups and orchestras such as the Brooklyn Philharmonic. After participating in and being inspired by the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, Ms. Lawrence founded the Monomoy Chamber Ensemble which has thrived for over thirty summers on Cape Cod.
