Robert Cornelius Mitchell was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on June 6, , one of eight children of the Reverend Albert and Avis Mitchell. He attended Langston High School in Hot Springs where he played football, baseball, basketball, and track. He then enrolled at the University of Illinois on a football scholarship.
